Setting up a nursery is one of the most exciting parts of preparing for a new baby. Our nursery range includes everything you need to create a beautiful, functional space, from furniture and storage to decor and sleep essentials that will grow with your little one.
A basic nursery setup includes a safe sleep space such as a cot or bassinet with a firm, fitted mattress, a change table or change mat, storage for clothes and nappies, and a comfortable feeding chair if space allows. Extras like a baby monitor, nightlight, and soft rug add practicality and comfort. Focus on safety and function first, then add decor to personalise the space.
Look for furniture that meets Australian safety standards, is made from non-toxic materials, and is built to last. Consider pieces that offer longevity, such as a cot that converts to a toddler bed or a change table with a removable topper. Measure your room carefully before buying, and think about the flow of the space to ensure you can move around comfortably with a baby in your arms.
The ideal room temperature for a baby's nursery is between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius. This range helps reduce the risk of overheating, which is associated with a higher risk of SIDS. Use a room thermometer to monitor temperature, and dress baby in appropriate layers for the conditions. Avoid positioning the cot near heaters, air conditioning vents, or direct sunlight.
Most nursery decor is safe when used correctly. Wall art should be hung securely and well out of baby's reach. Avoid hanging heavy items above the cot. Choose non-toxic paints and finishes for furniture and walls, and ensure any rugs or cushions used near a baby's sleep space are kept away from the cot itself. Mobiles should be mounted securely and removed once baby can push up on hands and knees.
Most parents begin setting up the nursery around the 28 to 32 week mark of pregnancy. This gives enough time to receive furniture orders, assemble pieces, and wash and organise clothes and supplies before baby arrives. Allowing a few weeks for any paint or new furniture off-gassing before baby sleeps in the room is also a good idea.
