Swaddles

Swaddling is a time-honoured technique for soothing newborns and helping them feel safe and secure in those early weeks of life. A good swaddle wrap snugly wraps your baby to reduce the startle reflex and encourage longer, more settled sleep. Explore our range of swaddle wraps in breathable cotton and muslin, designed for Australian conditions and gentle on newborn skin.

To swaddle safely, lay a wrap flat in a diamond shape, fold down the top corner, and place your baby face-up with their neck at the fold. Bring one side snugly across the body and tuck it behind, then bring the bottom up and fold it over, and finally wrap the remaining side across. The wrap should be firm but not tight, with enough room for the hips to move freely. Always place your swaddled baby on their back to sleep.

Muslin cotton is one of the most popular fabrics for baby swaddles due to its lightweight, breathable and soft properties. It is ideal for Australian conditions where temperatures can be warm. Organic cotton is another great choice for parents who prefer natural fibres. Avoid heavy or non-breathable fabrics, especially in warmer months, to reduce the risk of overheating.

Most health professionals recommend stopping swaddling when your baby starts showing signs of rolling, which can happen from around 2 months but is more common from 3 to 4 months. Once a baby can roll, swaddling can become unsafe. Transition your baby gradually by swaddling with one or both arms out, or move to an arms-free sleeping bag to maintain that cosy, contained feeling.

Having at least 3 to 5 swaddle wraps on hand is recommended so you always have a clean one ready. Newborns go through multiple wraps a day due to spills, spit-ups and nappy leaks. Muslin swaddles are lightweight and dry quickly, which is helpful when you are doing frequent washes. Having a good rotation means you are never caught short during the night.

Absolutely. Swaddle wraps are one of the most versatile baby items you can own. They can be used as a light blanket, a pram cover to block sun and wind, a change mat cover, a breastfeeding cover, a burp cloth, or even a play mat. Muslin wraps in particular are loved by parents for their many uses well beyond the swaddling stage, making them excellent value.
