What to look for in a toddler or kids backpack

• Size and capacity - Toddler packs (5 to 8 litres) are right for daycare and short trips. Primary school kids generally need 12 to 18 litres for a school day. Always check the dimensions - a bag that is too large will throw a small child off balance.
• Padded, adjustable straps - Padded shoulder straps are important for comfort, especially for daily use. Look for adjustable straps so the bag fits correctly now and grows with your child over the year.
• Easy-open zippers - Chunky zippers and large pull tabs make a huge difference for little hands trying to manage their bag independently. This matters especially for kindy and daycare where kids unpack themselves.
• Chest or sternum strap - A chest clip helps keep the bag centred on a small back and stops straps from falling off shoulders on active kids. Not always present on toddler bags but worth looking for on school bags.
• Wipe-clean material - Kids bags get messy. Look for fabrics that wipe clean easily, or check whether the bag is machine washable. This becomes especially important once snacks and craft supplies enter the equation.
